January and Butterflies both stand for “New Beginnings”. Kick off the New Year with this irresistible Butterfly quilt by Lella Boutique Patterns. Butterfly blocks are created with the Sew and Flip technique and puzzle assembly. These blocks alternate with nine-patch blocks so there are no sashings. Dorinda will teach both an optional butterfly shape and a strata technique for the nine-patch blocks. Perhaps you could try a dark background option.

Requirements:	SUPPLIES & MATERIALS NEEDED: “Flutter” pattern Sewing Machine in good working order Fabrics & Thread: 5½ yards of Background Fabric FQ or ¼ yard of accent fabric for nine-patch blocks. ½ yard fabric for butterfly bodies. Can be assorted. Ten FQ or Ten quarter yard cuts for butterfly wings OR Could use five half yard cuts. Thread to match background 5¼ yards backing-vertical seam Notions: Basic Sewing Supplies including mechanical pencil Best Press Cutting Mat and Rotary Cutter with New Blade Rulers: 6.5” square (OR 8.5” square) 12.5” square. Finished blocks are 9.5 x 13.5, so a 16.5” ruler is very helpful. PRE-CLASS HOMEWORK: I used Cherrywood fabric. Label Baggies as you cut! This is cutting for the entire quilt. If you cannot get all this done before class, please make your baggies and cut a few of each size. ** A Stripology Ruler could be very helpful! CUT BEFORE CLASS: For the nine-patch blocks: Cut (4) 1 ½” WOF strips from background Cut one 3 ½” WOF strip from background Subcut two rectangles 3 ½” x 13 ½” Subcut two rectangles 3 ½” x 5 ½” Cut (4) 1 ½” WOF strips from accent fabric (or if cutting from FQ, cut seven 1 ½” WOF strips From the Background fabric Cut (4) 13 ½” WOF strips. Subcut 40 rectangles at 3 ½” x 13 ½”. Cut (4) 5 ½” WOF strips. Subcut 40 rectangles at 3 ½” x 5 ½”. Baggie F Baggie G Cut (4) 3 ½” WOF strips. Subcut 40 squares at 3 ½”. Baggie H Cut (5) 2g ½” WOF strips. Subcut 40 rectangles at 2 ½” x 4 ½”. Baggie I Cut (5) 2 ½” WOF strips. Cut (1) 2 ½” WOF strip. Cut (4) 1 ½” WOF strips. Subcut 40 squares at 2 ½”. Baggie J Subcut 20 rectangles at 2 ½” x 1 ½”. Subcut 100 squares at 1 ½”. Baggie L Do NOT cut the butterfly prints until class. -->Do cut one butterfly body rectangle at 1 ½” x 6 ½”

Instructor Bio:	Dorinda Evans is a life-time quilter who enjoys sharing tips and techniques for improving excellence and ease in the process. She has a history that includes directing, judging, and participating in quilt shows where she has won numerous ribbons from local to international levels. Judges most often comment on her use of color, design, and innovation. During her time in the Craftsmans Guild of Mississippi, Dorinda won the Best Craftsmanship Award twice. The Curator of the MS Museum of Art placed 10 of Dorindas quilts into an exhibit at the museum. Dorinda’s work has been featured in quilting magazines, books, YouTube videos, and the American Quilt Society calendar. She has pattern tested for GE Designs and loves to simplify patterns for her students. Dorinda has taught quilting classes for quilt shops, quilting associations, and has been invited to lecture and teach guilds throughout the South.
