Bag Making Essentials: The Scarlett Bag: A Three-Part Workshop

Welcome to the world of bag making! This class is designed to help you discover the fun and versatility of bag making.
Be prepared to not only make the original Scarlett bag, but also learn how to add variations and embellishments to design your one-of-a-kind creations! We will explore the different materials and how to prepare, cut, iron, and sew
them into unique fashion accessories. We will also learn about various types of handbag hardware and how to install them. The first class will include shopping for your bag making supplies.
Items needed for class must be purchased from The Cotton Blossom (fabric, patterns, rulers, books, specialty thread, etc.) If you have basic sewing supplies and they are not listed below, please bring those (pins, scissors, seam ripper, needles, thread, etc.).
Class Description:
Come join the fun as we learn the fundamentals of bag making. We will explore the overall components, including options for materials, design, and hardware (in addition to the basics of thread types, interfacing, and needles). You will learn how to set yourself up for success when working with cork, faux leather and quilt cotton as well as how to customize your bag with various types of hardware, zippers, and embroidery. Next, we will go from the general to the specific and will be making the Scarlett bag by Sallie Tomato. The Scarlett bag is a versatile bag that can be made in a variety of materials. It is fully lined with an interior slip pocket and features a tab closure with a magnetic snap, an accent tassel, a shoulder strap and darts. Variations and embellishments (two-toned handle, inside zipper pocket, turn lock closure) will be demonstrated that can easily be transferred to any project where you would like to enhance the look of your bag. We will work with you to learn how to alter the pattern to make your one-of-a-kind creation!

The first session is a "Shopping Day" so no need to purchase your supplies ahead of time!  Supply list will be given on the first class.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details:
Requirements: Sewing Machine: you need to know how operate it, thread it, wind bobbins, and change the tension, needles and feet. We will be sewing through thick layers, so an "inexpensive" machine will not be able to sew through. Consider purchasing a new machine or renting a machine from us if your machine doesn't have enough "gumption." ;)
